What Are Project Management Methodologies?

Updated: Jan 16, 2022

The main purpose of project management is to use time, information and resources efficiently for the completion of projects. There are many important disciplines in project management. Sub-branches such as scheduling, risk management and planning constitute project management.

Project management methodologies aiming at the realization of a quality project delivery are frequently used in the business world. Project management techniques are used in sectors such as software, technology and automotive. As ITU Solar Car Team, we have adopted the hybrid project management that helps us to be ready for different scenarios that we call "predictive + agile".

Various methodologies are used in the business world. In recent years, the Agile project management technique, which has become increasingly popular, has come to the fore.

WHY IS AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT PREFERRED?

The basis of the Agile Project Management Methodology, which emerged in the search of a group of engineers to solve their unsuccessful projects, lies in being able to respond quickly and effectively in variable conditions.

Agile, which aims at the emergence of a productive project process, is an efficient management application that divides the project into certain stages. Leadership psychology integrated with teamwork, self-organization and responsibility are among the functions of this project management approach. With these functions, the main goals and visions of companies can be coordinated.

Companies, project teams or “start-ups” that have adopted this methodology come together at regular intervals to practice thinking in order to be effective and efficient. Behaviors and studies are organized in line with the decisions made at these meetings.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WATERFALL AND AGILE?

There are many different features between Waterfall, which is a traditional project management technique, and Agile. In the Waterfall Methodology, which has steps such as requirements, design, implementation, testing and live migration, the design is adhered to until the project is finalized. Even if the conditions change during the construction phase, the decisions taken at the beginning in line with this project management methodology are valid.

Agile, on the other hand, can add value to the work at every stage of the project. After finding the fastest solution, it progresses step by step by showing improvement in the missing areas.

HOW DOES ITU GAE BENEFIT FROM METHODOLOGIES WHILE IMPLEMENTING THE PROJECT?

An important part of the successful graphic of the ITU Solar Car Team for years is the project management methodology. With the AGILE-SCRUM training we received from our PMI certified graduate, we gained detailed information about team management techniques.

We have adopted the hybrid project management methodology that we call "predictive + agile", which we have created in order to be prepared for different scenarios. We are advancing the project steps efficiently with regular team meetings and general meetings.
